Workers Memorial Day 2009

Joanna's insperation for this years Workers Memorial Day poster.

"I will be receiving my BFA in Applied Design and Visual Arts this December in hopes to become a Graphic Designer. I was given an assignment to "create an image using text only". For the first time as an artist I wanted to create something that meant something to me. I didn't want to yet again create something pretty, cute, or fun to look at. I wanted to create something for me, and also use it as a way to express myself on the subject. I lost my father almost 4 1/2 years ago as a result of a refinery accident; a company in which he worked for 33 years. The text I used for the image are random words that constantly flow through my head since the day of the accident. Some are more grim words relating to the accident, some are things he often said to me, some are things that remind me of him, and others are advice that he once gave me that has always stuck with me. I wanted to show my father in his work uniform as opposed to just a normal portrait of him in an attempt to highlight the importance of his death, and how it should have been prevented. I feel honored that my work as a graphic designer can be used by USMWF, especially because of what this piece means to me. He got me here, and I feel it is his way of helping me with my work. Even though my father is no longer physically with me, his words always will be."

"Of course the honor is all ours, it is not every day that we get a true glimpse of the heart, that someone offers their mending soul for us to feel.  This is what it is all about; being there for one another, revitalizing the quality of life and adding that face to workers (our loved one) who have needlessly paid the ultimate price for the incompetence of our system and a few corporate pennies."

Hazards Magazine has created a series of posters “They are never the only victim”.  You can view Hazards campaign  here.  Rory O'Neill tells me Families are contacting him and demanding they be represented.  Rory O'Neill tells me Families are contacting him and demanding they be represented. The very same thing is happening all over the world a rarity a few year ago families are mad as hell and they will not sit idle while others control their families fate.

Two of Hazards posters have been created on our very own worker Travis Koehler and you can view the family fight here.  Seems this will reach the four corners of the earth sending a message that no worker is expendable.
