9/11
Quit
Days
after September 11, one woman with a great vision started
something that has touched millions of families across our
nation. That
woman is Jeannie Ammermann, and she has started the
America’s 9-11 Memorial Quilts Organization.
What started with only a few members believing in
her mission, now has over 500 volunteers throughout the
United States helping complete this dream.
Jeannie’s
Memorial consists of eight separate quilts commemorating
all those who were involved in the September 11th
attacks, one of which is the victims’ quilt.
Three separate quilts that will be combined to form
one 10 by 60 feet quilt are being constructed in Herbster
Wisconsin with team leader Connie Daniels.
3,000, 9/11 victim will be put on the quilt. Bill
Doyle will be accepting this quilt on behalf of all the
9/11 families.
There
will also be a quilt dedicated to the Pentagon, and the
victims there. Team
Leader Irene Rose and Co-Leader Kathy Kline along with
many other volunteers are working diligently to create
this quilt with a total of 189 photos.
Included on this quilt will be the crew and
passengers of Flight #77, military civilians, vendors, and
the uniformed military personnel.
Andrea
Blair in Salt Lake City, Utah heads the NY/NJ Port
Authority Quilt. Andrea
and her team are working on this log cabin design quilt
and dedicated it to the NY/NJ Port Authority Police Dept
and the families on September 11th, 2002 at
Ground Zero. Along
with this quilt is a Port Authority Staff quilt that is
lead by Robin Pappas of Sioux Falls, SD.
Robin and her many volunteers are working hard to
create this beautiful quilt that will hold 48 photos and
will be donated to the Part Authority Staffing Department.
The
FDNY quilt is being constructed by the hard working
Washington Square Quilters of Washington, Illinois. Team
Leader Peggy Hessling and Co-Team Leader Jan Mishler are
working with the 25 volunteers to create a quilt with 346
photos of those brave firefighters who gave their lives to
help rescue victims at the WTC.
When finished, this quilt will be dedicated to the
FDNY.
Team
Leader Belva Gray, Co-Team Leader Connie Westrick, and
volunteers are constructing a Quilt commemorating the
families of Flight 93 in Wabash, IN.
When finished, this quilt will display 40 photos
and will be dedicated to the Families of Flight 93 and
Shanksville Memorial if accepted.
IN
Dixon Illinois, Team Leader Sue Ramage, and dozens of appreciated volunteers will be designing a quilt that will
display eight EMS heroes. When finished this quilt will be dedicated to the New York
Emergency Medical Services.
The
eighth quilts are being designed and constructed in
Ridgewood New Jersey by Team Leader Dr. Elizabeth Holley
and her volunteers. This
quilt will feature 23 NYPD heroes, and when finished will
be dedicated to the New York Police Dept.
Jeannie
and her 500 dedicated volunteers wish to finish all eight
quilts by this fall.
Upon completion of the Victims’ Quilt, it will be
dedicated to the 9/11 families with hope that it will be
permanently preserved at the WTC memorial park.
Along with the remaining seven quilts, their goal
is to donate them on September 11th to those
families and heroes involved.
