Culture of Life

Our President takes a strong stand for life to be precise a culture of life! This should entail giving protection to the innocent, week, handicapped, elderly and dependant by showing them compassion, giving them value and a voice. We never truly know a person’s heart and mind so we must investigate the whole scope of works.

What has President Bush said about the workforce? President Bush has stated that he wanted the U.S. to be the best place in the world to do business and to obtain this status we must reduce regulations imposed on employers.

Since then he has kept his promise to do so we had 6 worker rights:

1. Paid overtime.
2. Enlist a union. For some teachers.
3. Paid leave for a newborn or family member.
4. Workers compensation.
5. A workplace free of recognized health and safety hazards. "The key word being recognized. OSHA has to recognize them and OSHA has dropped 21 proposed regulations. On such things as tuberculosis exposer, toxic chemical exposer, reactive chemicals, flammable chemicals, metal working fluids."
6. Not to be discriminated against because of your age, disability, gender, pregnancy, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or immigrant status.

The sanctity of every life (culture of life) is important, especially those who are working hard to care for their families. We lost 5,559 family members in 2003. Leaving about 13,898 children without a parent, let alone the widows and parents grieving the loss of child. It’s no secret that the key to this problem is to protect the worker through safety training and new regulations.

I was reading a very old and knowledgeable book and came across one of the first recorded worker regulations, it explained how to protect a roofer and what the consequences were if the worker died. It read: “When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof.”

What do you suppose the penalty of the bloodguilt was? If they had knowledge of the danger they were to be put to death, if they caused the death but it was accidental they were to be provided with a trial and protection but still remained responsible and if they disobeyed the instructions of the laws (after the fact) they were to be put to death. It also states that these people should not get by with just a payoff!

Do I feel this is extreme…well that is really not for me to judge in this case but what I do feel is that a workers death should be treated as a car accident? Whether it be involuntary or voluntary it is manslaughter.

In order to hold this precious culture of life we need to finally give lost workers a voice. Show the working class some real compassion by giving them the safety training they need. Value our workers by making it a crime to kill them.
